Anyone who knows more about Beetles than I do want to help me with a transaxle issue I'm having?

What is the issue and are you running a stock box in it?

Umm....

Stock, yes.
Had excessive slop in the shift coupler, under the back seat. Replaced it with a new one, exact same amount of slop. Is there something else that should be replaced to eliminate this? I'm pretty sure it's a major factor in my main problem, which is when you're in first gear, you're actually in neutral, and when you're in neutral you're in a gear.
Also, are you working Monday?

not a lot of beetle specific experience, but shifter linkage is all similar... Things to check?
Bushings directly unde the shifter knob
Engine/transmission mounts
Disconnect linkage rods and try moving them by hand
Unfortunately not super easy to troubleshoot but not too hard. I am so far awayyyyyyyyyyy (just near Boston) I'd look at it though.

I am not working Mon but am out of town. Check all of the linkage from the bottom of the shifter lever to the transmission. Something is off there

you're positive the shifter base is aligned properly? Even a slight misalignment at the front can create a problem in back.

Your shift linkage bushings might be so far out oh whack, the shifter alignment is basically useless.
I had a somewhat similar issue regarding shifter positioning, but it ended up being a bad transmission that totally failed on me at a traffic light. Bearings came out of the races and caused catastrophic failure.
Check the rubber shift linkage bushings immediately, theyre likely 90% rotted out.

I'm pretty sure my problem is in both places :/
